Can Dilbert’s Wally Really Be a Top Performer?

I just had to laugh at the second clip in this.  Wally should be up for a very large bonus based on his analysis…

What is sad, is that many companies reward programs actually would reward this type of behavior.  Not failing is actually seen as a positive and rewarded.  This leads to all sorts of behavior that minimize risk and limit exploration.  Think about what this means for a company long term?  Think the type of culture it breads?  Do you think people really want to work in a company that rewards the Wally’s of this world?

Motivated by adversity: Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog

First, if you have not watched Joss Whedon’s Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog starring Neil Patrick Harris, Felicia Day, and Nathan Fillion – please,  please do.  It is funny….ha, ha, ha, he, he, ha…. (ok, I need to work on my laugh – you’ll see the connection after watching).

Play “The Lotto Game” – what would you do with your life if you won?

I am too much of an analytic to play the Lotto much.  The odds are just not there for me to spend my money on.  I might as well take my dollar and throw it out the car window – at least that way, somebody might find it and get some use out of it.

However, while I don’t play much – on occasion I do.

It is on these occasions that I make it a rule to play a game that I call “The Lotto Game.”  It involves spending time dreaming about what I would do with the money if I won.  Would I go out and buy a bunch of things?  Would I take a trip around the world?  Give it away to charity?

I can spend hours visualizing what I would do with my millions.  This way I feel that I am getting something for my money – the entertainment value of the dreaming.

SXSW 2010: Motivation Personified!

Another SXSW has come to an end and although I did not attend I have enjoyed reading articles from those that did attend.  The event has turned into something of a phenomenon in the techie world even though it was originally touted as a music festival in Austin, TX.  Good music apparently attracted some great thinkers, innovators, and all around fun geeks.

I was checking out the Annual Web Awards winners and came across the coolest video not surprisingly created by an ad agency, Boone Oakley.

What motivates an ad agency to create a video that ultimately is there website on You Tube? To get noticed of course! But beyond that it tells their story and somehow creates an interactive website using video. It takes a plain website idea to the next level. How cool is that! If you click on the other areas of the video you really start to have a feel for who BooneOakley is and for me it was great to experience their humor.

Sit back and enjoy.  If you need a shift in perspective, motivation to create something new, or just need a good laugh this is the right place to be, have fun!
